Li Xi Envelope by Design Night
December 2006
It’s hard to decide whether to tell the story of the object or the story of the making of the object. You have a friend, no doubt, who would love to [fill in the blank creative activity] if only she or he had the time. “I’ve always wanted to….” “I wish I could find the time to….” Well, Tram Pham and her husband Dominic D’Andrea both award-winning PDX-based designers decided that the only way to carve out the creative time for their own great ideas was to have a Design Night. And so once a week, they made a date with design.
The Li Xi envelope is the first Design Night project to come to production. Li Xi or “lucky money” is traditionally given during Chinese New Year in a red and gold envelope. This one features a pig for 2007, Year of the Pig. Unlike other red envelopes printed in gold, this one is intricately laser cut of red crepe paper. Because of the delicate nature of the paper and design, each envelope is hand assembled.
You can find Li Xi envelopes at Imp on NE Alberta and at Flutter on N. Mississippi. Powells on Burnside will start carrying them at the end of December. Or check the Design Night website. We can’t wait to see what comes out of Design Night next..
